A fire that destroyed a barn near Kinburn on Monday started when a car inside the barn caught fire, the Ottawa Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to a farm on Kinburn Side Road, just northeast of the village, shortly after 1:15 p.m. when a 911 caller reported that a car had caught fire and that the barn contained fuel and other flammable substances.

The barn was full of antique carriages and sleds, the fire department said. There were no animals in the barn and all the people had gotten out safely.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from all four sides of the barn. An aerial ladder was set up to fight the fire from above. There are no fire hydrants in the area, so firefighters used tanker trunks to transport water from the Carp River to the accident site.

The barn began to collapse at 2:12 p.m. The fire was declared under control at 4:08 p.m

An excavator was called to the scene to extinguish the hotspots and a fire investigator was dispatched to the scene.
