Former SC State student charged in connection with 2023 campus shooting that left 1 injured

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged a former South Carolina State (SC State) student in connection with a 2023 shooting on campus.

On Thursday, October 24, Melvin Anthony Williams, 21, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

According to arrest warrants, on March 3, 2023, Williams fired a gun into a crowd of students, stabbing and wounding one person in the leg.

Months after the shooting, SLED arrested 20-year-old Daniel Eugene Hutto. He was charged before the fact with accessory to attempted murder.

Investigators said Hutto opened his book bag and allowed the suspect to use the gun used to fire into a crowd of students.

SC State Police requested SLED to investigate.

Williams was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

The case will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
