Prince William makes rare comments about estranged brother Harry

Prince William and Prince Harry may still be taking space from each other, but if they remember their late mother, Princess DianaIn his documentary, William nodded to his younger brother.

In the upcoming two-part docuseries Prince William: We can end homelessnessthe Prince of Wales recalls a transformative childhood moment he and Harry shared. In a preview clip released Saturday, the royal speaks about how he got involved in charity work and finding solutions to the homelessness crisis. He said his mother introduced him and Harry to the Passage, a British charity for the homeless, when they were just young boys.

“My mother took me to the Passage; She took Harry and me both there. I must have been 11 at the time, maybe 10,” says William. “I had never been to anything like this before, and I was a little worried about what to expect.”

He adds: “My mother went about her business as usual, which made everyone feel relaxed and able to laugh and joke with everyone. I remember thinking at the time, “Well, if everyone doesn’t have a house, they’ll all be very sad.” But it was unbelievable how happy the environment was.”

William says the visit gave him some perspective and made him aware of his privilege.

“I remember having good conversations, playing chess and chatting, and then it dawned on me that there were other people who don’t live the same lives as you,” he says. “You know, when you’re really little, you just think that life is what you see in front of you, and you don’t really have the idea of looking at anything else. It’s when you meet people, like I did then, who put a different perspective in your head and say, “Well, I was living on the streets last night,” and you think, “Wow.” I remember that happening.”

Although brief, his retelling of the moment with Princess Di and Harry marks the first time William has spoken publicly about his brother since their estrangement. The brothers fell out after Harry made the decision to step down as a senior member of the royal family and move from England with his wife Meghan Markle. The rift only worsened when Harry and Meghan were released their Netflix documentary– in which they got candid about life in the British royal family – and when Harry released his 2023 memoir, Savein which he wrote that he was always treated second only to William.

Still, Harry has expressed hope that he and his older brother will mend ties and their families will be closer in the near future.

William’s docuseries premieres on Disney+ on November 1 and airs on ITV in the UK on October 30 and 31
