Jackie Langford wants justice after her brother Marvin Sledge dies of a fentanyl overdose

Athens, Ala. (WAF) – Jackie Langford wants justice for her brother’s death from a fentanyl overdose earlier this month.

Marvin Sledge, 44, was last seen alive on October 12 outside a J Mart gas station in Athens with a man and a woman.

Langford and her family were notified of Sledge’s overdose four hours later via a Facebook post.

“It’s just devastating,” she said.

Langford was told by people near the gas station that after Sledge was given the fentanyl and he ingested the drug, the two put her unconscious brother in the backseat of his car.

They then took him to a nearby house in Athens, where CCTV footage from Ring shows his car being hit. The male driver then runs into the house and asks for Narcan (can reverse the effects of fentanyl).

Sledge was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Langford says her brother’s death was not immediately reported to the family and they were not even allowed to see his body for six days.

She says his death is extremely hard on her and her mother. Marvin’s twin brother, Marlon, died in a car accident six years ago.

In the 16 days since Sledge’s death, authorities have not arrested anyone.

Langford says she doesn’t just want answers. She wants justice.

‘He didn’t do this. We know he didn’t do this,” Langford said. “

Limestone County Sheriff Josh McLaughlin says this case remains under investigation and his department will not make any arrests until probable cause is established.

Sledge’s overdose is one of two fentanyl-related deaths this month in Limestone County. On Sunday, investigators charged Rebecca Myrick, 60, with manslaughter in the overdose death of Lawrence Light, 54.

This comes months after the passage of the Alabama Manslaughter Law, which charges anyone who makes, sells or distributes fentanyl with manslaughter.

Myrick is currently being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond.
