James “The Dead” at the American Irish Historical Society

James “The Dead” at the American Irish Historical Society

Dot Dot Productions, in association with the American Irish Historical Society, presents the Irish Repertory Theater’s production of James Joyce’s “The Dead” this holiday season.

Based on the novella by James Joyce “The Dead, 1904”adapted by Paul Muldoon & Jean Hanff Korelitz and directed by Ciarán O’Reilly, will be performed at the American Irish Historical Society on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This Gilded Age mansion provides a beautiful backdrop for this holiday favorite.

James Joyce’s novella “The Dead”, describes a festive gathering on January 6, 1904, the Feast of the Epiphany, at the Dublin home of two older sisters, Kate and Julia Morkan, and their niece, Mary Jane. At the party are students, friends, a celebrated tenor, a lost alcoholic and the married couple Gabriel and Gretta Conroy.

Over the course of an evening there are conversations, music, dancing and dinner. There are speeches and disagreements – polite and rude – and when it’s all over, Gabriel learns something about his wife that changes his sense of who she is and who they are to each other, of what it actually means to be alive and to be dead . .

This exquisite recreation of James Joyce’s moving story was New York’s most sought-after theatrical event in 2016 and Holiday 2017 seasons. The American Irish Historical Society enjoy the opportunity to welcome guests again or for the first time.

“The Dead, 1904” runs from Wednesday, November 20, 2024 through Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Tickets can be purchased here through the Irish Repertory Theatre.
