DULUTH – A man is facing multiple charges after a shooting in the city’s Central Hillside neighborhood this summer.

Andre Deon Woods, 56, of Duluth, is accused of shooting into a crowd, striking and wounding Trever Claude Brown, 30, after an argument on Aug. 24.

Woods was also shot by an unknown man during the altercation, according to court documents, and remained hospitalized until Oct. 8, when he was transferred to the St. Louis County Jail.

According to a criminal complaint:

Duluth police officers were

called around 2:15 a.m. to the 100 block of East Third Street,

witnesses reported that 10 to 12 shots had been fired and someone had been loaded into a car, screaming.

Officers stopped a Chrysler heading west from the scene on Third Street. Woods, a passenger, had gunshot wounds to his torso and upper arm.

Meanwhile, Brown walked into an emergency room with a gunshot wound to the groin. X-rays revealed clear bullet fragments located in his hip area. He told officers he was shot during an argument between Woods and the unknown man.

Police subsequently obtained surveillance video showing the altercation involving the three men on the porch of 119 E. Third St. The unidentified person was heard provoking Woods, who then briefly stepped into an entrance before emerging.

The video reportedly shows Woods firing a gun twice, once from the porch and another time after descending the stairs, before walking away from the building out of view of the camera.

Another angle then shows the unknown man firing three shots in Woods’ direction, knocking him to the ground. In return, Woods fired approximately seven more rounds before being loaded into the Chrysler, according to the video.

Police said no gun was ever found, but there were eight .22 caliber shell casings in the area where Woods was seen shooting. The video reportedly showed at least eight people in the direction he shot.

Woods has an extensive criminal history, including third-degree assault in 2011, simple robbery in 2013, threats of violence in 2014 and second-degree burglary in 2016 – all of which ban him from possessing firearms.

A request for emergency custody filed by Aspirus St. Luke’s indicates that Woods “smelled strongly of alcohol and also tested positive for cocaine” when he was admitted. He underwent emergency surgery, with injuries including a liver laceration, shattered rib and spinal fracture. Some bullet fragments had to be left in place.

Woods was charged this month with second-degree assault, illegal possession of a firearm, reckless disposal of a firearm within a municipality and intentional disposal of a firearm endangering safety.

After his release from the hospital, Judge Nicole Hopps set bail at $100,000. Woods’ next court appearance was scheduled for November 5.
