BlackOps6 has finally been released, and early reactions from the gaming community and critics suggest that this year’s entry is a step up from more recent titles. It was time for the developers to take the franchise back in the right direction and get out of the hole it fell into years ago.

Despite having a great single-player story mode, combat mechanics like the human shield and an omnidirectional movement system, there is one aspect that the developers didn’t bother with for this installment. Players would appreciate hearing Case talk instead of a voiceless grunt.

While it makes sense for the plot, Case is another silent protagonist, much like Bell Call of duty Black Ops Cold War; Unfortunately, not everyone is a fan of the playable main character, a voiceless grunt similar to an avatar in an online game. Unlike Alex Mason and other older protagonists, players can feel transported and that their character is human, while taking away their voice is the exact opposite.

The irony is that the Black operations series broke the tradition of silent protagonists. Previous entries were much more fun because players could identify with their playable characters and realize that they were people with lives and stories to tell, and not empty avatars to be puppeteered around.

Previous entries had the main character being able to talk. Treyarch even had the luxury of hiring impressive Hollywood talent like Sam Worthington to voice Alex Mason BlackOps2 years ago. Even the playable characters from the most recent entries from the reboot Modern warfare trilogy such as Gaz, Soap, Ghost and more would occasionally talk to each other and keep each other informed.

Mason has been through hell during his journey and players can feel that through his dialogue, especially with everything he, Woods, Hudson and others have seen in their years of service, is enough to scar a man for the rest of their lives deliver.

Bell is a completely different story and the reasoning behind his inability to speak made sense because the story was a brainwashed Soviet spy with no memory of his past. Ultimately, Adler had to eliminate the character, as he was a loose end that needed to be addressed, hence the lack of mention in the critically acclaimed sequel; However, not much is known about Case’s past and some players found it strange why the developers refused to give him speaking lines.

Earlier Call of duty the entries had no speaking protagonists and could easily be attributed to the availability of the technology at the time; However, the game developers deliberately took that approach to make these characters much more mysterious. Players take on the role of highly trained personnel and these characters would not drop the facade while on active duty.

Characters like Ghost are a bit of a legend in the franchise due to their iconic mask; However, the developers gave him a voice in the reboot trilogy and he bounced off Soap in conversations and silly jokes, building that sense of camaraderie and friendship. It would have been nice to see Case get the same treatment in this episode.

Fans want to hear out loud and know what their characters are thinking about; Unfortunately, it can become too annoying if a character is too talkative, but it builds personality. The developers have introduced some compelling characters with distinct personalities, like Woods and Adler, and they might even do that place them against each other to see which character is preferred by many.

While there’s nothing wrong with a mute character, it’s a shame that you can’t hear conversations between allies or that the main character can’t express his thoughts, which will be a voiceless grunt throughout the game. The ability to speak is like a window into a character’s personality and players can understand where they are coming from rather than being told what to do.

It’s worth noting that Case was a volunteer test subject for Project Cradle before joining Woods’ team. BlackOps6 and the experiments could have caused some unexpected side effects. Players can also look at it from a different perspective as Case is an obedient soldier who knows when to shut up and is more focused on completing his mission.

Perhaps Case can speak, but chooses not to and is too committed to the special forces role. Call of duty has existed for years with silent protagonists and some fans even became attached to them without a voice, as their actions left a greater impact; however, it’s a shame to see years of progress in that area completely ignored in what looks to be the best entry in quite some time.
