Ange Postecoglou confirms ‘serious’ Spurs news as injury problems mount

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Tottenham’s summer signing Wilson Odobert has suffered a “serious” setback in his recovery from injury.

The £25million former Burnley striker returned as a substitute against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League last Thursday after more than a month away with a hamstring problem.

However, he was not in the squad for Sunday’s hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and Postecoglou has confirmed that the talented 19-year-old will be on the sidelines again.

Postecoglou said ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Manchester City, having already revealed the absence of captain Son Heung-min: “The only other one who is missing and which is a bit of a disappointment is Wilson, who has had a setback . during the week and it looks like it’s a serious event, so we’re just waiting for more information. It’s not exactly the same (injury), but the same area.”

Odobert has played five games Tottenham since his summer switch from the Clarets, making three starts and coming off the bench twice.

He came into action in the 88th minute against AZ Alkmaar last Thursday, his first appearance since the Carabao Cup victory in Coventry on September 18.

Son, meanwhile, has missed the past two games with a tight hamstring and the South Korean is still not ready to return. However, Postecoglou is hopeful that he will be fit against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Australian added: “Son is almost fit, but from our perspective we are probably aiming for the weekend. We are confident that he will be fit this weekend.”

Odobert, son’s absence opens the door for Moore

The absence of Odobert and Son means teenage winger Mikey Moore could get another chance to shine against City in the Carabao Cup.

The 17-year-old was electric in the opening 20 minutes of the second half in the win over AZ last week and did enough to give Timo Werner the lead for the weekend’s defeat at Palace.

However, he failed to reach those heights again and was eventually replaced by the German as Spurs hunted for an equalizer against an Eagles side who had yet to win a league game this season.

But with Werner’s confidence at an all-time low, he is more likely to give Moore another chance against Pep Guardiola’s men.

The only other alternatives would be to push James Maddison out wide on the left or move Dejan Kulusevski back to his spot on the right wing and switch Brennan Johnson to the other side.

Either way, Tottenham need Son back in action as soon as possible, with the South Korean seemingly finding his best form again in the resounding win over West Ham.
