What’s the latest on the redevelopment of St. Luke’s? Meeting on Wednesday to discuss

The master plan for the redevelopment of Mohawk Valley Health System’s St. Luke’s Campus in New Hartford will be released at a public meeting Wednesday evening.

Oneida County, MVHS, Mohawk Valley EDGE and the City of New Hartford will host the meeting, which they are calling a community visioning workshop, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Soggs Room of the MVHS Center for Rehabilitation & Continuing Care Services on St. Lucas Campus.

“We look forward to sharing the vision that has taken shape for the former St. Luke’s Hospital Campus,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. said. in a statement. “This plan is the result of careful research, thorough site analysis and, most importantly, input from our community. We are excited to present the conceptual site plan and continue the dialogue as we move toward a transformative redevelopment that will benefit Oneida for generations County will have to come.”

The hospital on St. Luke’s Campus closed after Wynn Hospital opened in downtown Utica last fall. The Reimagine project is developing a reuse plan for the 53-acre campus that takes into account the community’s wishes for the site and makes it easier and faster for a developer to build on the site.

The Reimagine St. Luke's team will present its preliminary concept for the reuse of the Mohawk Valley Health System's St. Luke's Campus to the public on Wednesday evening, October 30, 2024. MVHS will continue to operate its nursing home and other continuing care services from one building on the site. The site also contains wetlands, which cannot be developed. The plan determines whether other buildings should be demolished or reused.

A similar plan is being developed for MVHS’s St. Elizabeth Campus in Utica.

Participants can view the conceptual site plan, speak with employees of Fu Wilmers Design, the company leading the master plan, and provide input. The meeting will also explain how the plan was designed using public input and what the next steps will be, including finding funding and possible development phases for implementation.

The summary findings of a related facilities survey of the St. Luke’s Campus and its buildings – to determine physical conditions and which areas of the campus may be suitable for reuse – will also be presented at the meeting. That research, led by Weston & Sampson, is taking place concurrently with the Reimagine project by the same partners: Oneida County, MVHS, MV EDGE and New Hartford.

This is the fourth public meeting for the “Reimagine St. Luke’s – Planning for the Future” project. The meetings were held to gather public input and share information.

The project also received input from an advisory group made up of community leaders, representatives from surrounding neighborhoods, community service organizations, faith-based groups, small business owners, housing organizations and real estate developers.
