Rocky Mount man arrested after Sunday’s shooting

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina man is behind bars after a shooting on Sunday.

Rocky Mount police say they were called to Nash UNC Health Care around 3:20 a.m. after a shooting left someone injured.

When they got there, police discovered the shooting happened on Starling Way in Rocky Mount.

Police say the victim, 29-year-old Malik Dickens, was shot in the upper thighs and groin.

Dickens was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment.

After further investigation, police today identified Darrian Jenkins-Gupton of Rocky Mount as the suspect.

According to police, the investigation revealed that the two men had an ongoing argument.

Jenkins-Gupton, 30, was charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflict serious injury
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Discharge a firearm within city limits

Jenkins-Gupton is in the Nash County Jail without bond.

Police say Dickens will survive.
