Interim Saratoga Springs DPW Commissioner Named | News

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the appointment of an interim public works commissioner, more than two months after Jason Golub resigned to take a job with the state.

Henry “Hank” Kuczynski, deputy mayor under former Saratoga Springs Mayor Ken Klotz, was approved 4-0 to fill the position during a council meeting on the city’s proposed 2025 budget.

The announcement comes more than a week after Joe Suhrada, commissioner of the Saratoga County Republican Board of Elections, said he would not support a special election in January to fill the seat. Suhrada said he does not believe the special election is legal and cited issues such as paying to hold the special election and training people on the new voting machines that will be implemented after next week’s general election as reasons why he would not take the step supported. .

The move to appoint an interim commissioner also comes after City Council members repeatedly indicated they support a process in which a committee would make a recommendation on who should be appointed to the role. However, the committee was never approved and the public was not notified of an impending decision until four and a half hours before a budget meeting, Wednesday, where the decision would be made.

Kuczynski, who also previously chaired the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority, was the city’s first deputy mayor following a revision of the city charter in the early 2000s.
