Detroit police are investigating why Lions’ Jameson Williams went free after discovering a gun

Detroit police are investigating why Lions receiver Jameson Williams was not arrested after weapons were found in a vehicle he was a passenger in during a traffic stop.

Williams, who is currently a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policywas almost arrested on October 8 for having a firearm in his vehicle before being released by police.

Now Detroit police are investigating why Williams was released without being taken to jail. according to WYZX News.

Williams was reportedly sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother when Detroit police pulled them over and found two guns: one in the backseat and another under the NFLer’s seat.

The gun under Williams’ seat was registered in his name, even though he did not have a concealed pistol permit.

Body camera footage showed police officers telling Williams he would be taken into custody before the wide receiver begged to be released.

“I play for the Lions, brother. I’m Jameson Williams,” he said. “Bro, I play for the Detroit Lions.”

Williams’ brother then tried to claim the gun was his before the wide receiver later admitted it was his.

“I was given the gun for protection,” Williams said. ‘Do you know where I live? Detroit!”

Williams was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car while a police supervisor arrived on the scene.

The sergeant, who was believed to be a Lions fan based on his cellphone background as seen in the bodycam footage, made several phone calls before returning Williams’ gun and letting them both go, a decision now in question is drawn.

“I think there was probable cause to arrest, and he was arrested by the police officer,” Detroit Police Chief Michael McGinnis said, according to WYZX News. “And that’s why he should have been transferred to the Detroit Detention Center and treated there. (Chief James White) was very unhappy about the whole of the circumstances here. To even go so far as to say he was angry.”

Williams could face a concealed weapons charge if the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office decides to pursue a warrant from the Detroit Police Department.

The Lions released a statement on the matter, acknowledging that they became aware of the situation shortly after the incident.

“Jameson immediately notified us that he was a passenger during a routine traffic stop on October 8,” the team said. “We have discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know. We understand he was released without incident or citation. We now understand that Detroit police are re-investigating the case. Jameson has retained an attorney and out of respect for the legal process we will have no further comment.”

Williams’ lawyer claims the Lions star has committed no crimes.

“On October 8, my clients were arrested for an alleged traffic violation. During the stop, my clients were both cooperative and respectful toward the police officers. The two handguns found in the vehicle were both properly registered and the driver in the vehicle had the proper paperwork to carry them. We have cooperated with the police and will continue to do so.”
