Prosecutors are seeking higher bail for the Las Vegas police sergeant accused of unlawful arrest

Prosecutors want a judge to set bail for the Las Vegas police sergeant accused of unlawful arrest and possession of child pornography.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion for a bail hearing on Tuesday, saying they want Kevin Menon’s bail increased to $250,000, cash only. He was released on $100,000 bail during the weekend.

If released, prosecutors also want Menon to surrender his passport and weapons, be placed on high-level electronic surveillance and be subject to a no-contact order with officers who testified as witnesses at the grand jury.

The Public Prosecution Service states that Menon, after the arrest last week on suspicion of possessing child pornography, is now more likely to escape supervision.

“In light of the evidence gathered in both cases, and the fact that in these two cases, citizens he was sworn to protect are victimized and engaged in activities that perpetuate the sexual exploitation of children, the there is a very good chance that the defendant will be sent to prison. prison in both cases,” the motion said. “Accordingly, defendant poses a clear and present flight risk.”

Prosecutors say Menon could be a danger to others as well as himself, citing “credible sources” who indicated Menon was suicidal before his arrest.

They also allege that Menon wiped the memory of his Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department-issued phone after his first arrest and attempted to delete child pornographic material from a laptop earlier this year.

Menon was first arrested in August on several points of oppression under the color of office. Prosecutors alleged he fabricated incidents to detain or arrest various people when there was no probable cause.

According to LVMPD, Menon was suspended in May pending further investigation and was later placed on unpaid leave in September. He was arrested again last week on child pornography charges.

A hearing on the bail motion is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
