EU to impose additional tariffs on Chinese EVs

EU to impose additional tariffs on Chinese EVs

The European Union plans to impose additional tariffs on electric vehicles made in China, saying EV manufacturers receive unfair subsidies from the government.

The European Commission said on Tuesday that additional tariffs of up to 35.3 percent will be imposed from Wednesday on top of the existing 10 percent levies.

The committee that oversees EU trade policy says such Chinese practices could pose a threat to European businesses.

The new measures will remain in force for five years unless a review is initiated sooner.

The EU plans to continue negotiations with China and says it remains open to “a possible alternative solution”.

Meanwhile, China imposed provisional tariffs on cognac imported from EU member states in October.

Beijing is also investigating whether the prices of pork and dairy products from the EU are being kept unfairly low.
