LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Seven inmates were hospitalized Tuesday morning after a suspected overdose incident at the Men’s Central Jail near downtown Los Angeles, officials said.

Shortly before 7 a.m., firefighter-paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department were called by LA County Sheriff’s Department personnel to assist “seven individuals (all believed to be inmates), who may have inhaled a yet-to-be formally identified substance or have been exposed to it within six hours’. jail,” the LAFD said in a statement.

All seven patients were transported to hospitals for further evaluation or necessary care, officials said. One is in critical condition, the other six are in stable condition.

“No escalating hazard or off-site hazard has been identified,” the news release said.

Just before 3 p.m., seven officers were also taken to hospitals as a precaution after experiencing symptoms possibly related to the suspected overdose incident from earlier.

“Police deputies were searching the dormitory and the inmates’ belongings before repopulating the location when some of them began experiencing some symptoms,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

All deputies were conscious and in stable condition.
