Evans High School coach arrested, accused of inappropriate sexual conduct

EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A community coach at Evans High School has been arrested and charged with inappropriate sexual conduct by a teacher, according to Columbia County jail records.

According to records, 30-year-old Montel Watters was arrested Tuesday.

In a letter sent to families, school officials say administrators have been made aware of a report of an inappropriate relationship between Watters and a student that occurred off campus.

According to the letter, the Columbia County School District Police Department was immediately contacted to investigate.

A school district spokesperson says a community coach undergoes a background check and receives a stipend, but is otherwise not employed by the district.

School officials say Watters will no longer work with the team or the school in any capacity.

Watters’ bond was set at $5,100, according to jail bookings.

“The safety of students and staff is a top priority and the CCSD does not and will not tolerate inappropriate relationships,” Principal Wade White said in the letter sent to families. “In an effort to keep you informed, we thought it best to inform our parents of the investigation and its implications.”
