Students warm hearts, bodies with donation to Cornerstone Rescue Mission

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Students and staff from St. Thomas More High and Middle and St. Elizabeth Seaton Elementary Schools delivered winter clothing to Cornerstone Rescue Mission Tuesday morning.

For the past six years, the schools have raised clothing and money to purchase needed items after Cornerstone reached out looking for a partnership.

“We usually give people three weeks’ notice, and we designate a day for – we call it ‘comfortable for a good cause,’ so you can donate a minimum of about $3 and that money goes towards all the stuff, and we have about three weeks where you can just donate long johns or socks,” said Sloane Keszler, student body president at St. Thomas More High School.

Keszler added that she enjoys giving back to the community and Thomas O’Meara, St. Thomas More Middle School, agreed.

“It feels good to know that you are giving things that you take for granted, and that you are giving it to other people who need it more. It just feels good to do that,” O’Meara said.

Operations Manager at Cornerstone Rescue Mission, Matthew Hower, said it is as good for the children as it is for the organisation.

“When we need something, our community as a whole is always there. The children have fun, they learn other valuable life skills, communication, organizing events and the like. It was also quite nice to see that there were student representatives from each group,” Hower said.

If you would like to donate winter items to Cornerstone Rescue Mission, you can drop items off at the front door of 30 Main Street or at their thrift store at 401 11th street.
