Students from seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) today (October 30) blocked the Science Lab intersection in the capital, demanding a separate university.

Like the previous days, they started the blockade around 11am, confirmed Jisanul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Dhanmondi zone).

The agitating students said they were given a 24-hour ultimatum yesterday (October 29), but the relevant authorities did not pay attention to it. They said their protests will continue until the demands are met.

Meanwhile, commuters are suffering from heavy traffic jams caused by the road blockade. Vehicular movement has come to a complete standstill on the roads surrounding the Science Lab intersection.

Education consultant Wahiduddin Mahmud said in a statement issued today that the government has already formed a committee of relevant experts to consider the demands of students of seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University.

He said the committee would quickly prepare a report within seven weeks.

“The problem started a few years ago with an ill-advised decision to take seven colleges in Dhaka out of the ambit of the National University and incorporate them into the University of Dhaka. As a result, problems have arisen on both sides of Dhaka University and its seven colleges, and the students of those seven colleges have faced various difficulties and discrimination,” Wahiduddin Mahmud said in the statement.

“The problems are complex and require at least some time to come up with an appropriate solution,” he added.
