Odisha CM Mohan Majhi announces compensation of Rs 6 lakh for metro tunnel victims

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced financial compensation of Rs 6 lakhs each for the family members of two laborers who died in the construction accident at Patna metro tunnel in Biharon late on Monday night.

The Chief Minister also expressed his deep sorrow over the unfortunate death of the worker duo.

According to the press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office on Wednesday, the deceased were identified as Manoj Behera of Gochhabari village in Gania block and Bijay Behera of Kadua village in Nayagarh district.

Notably, at least three workers were killed and four others suffered serious injuries during the construction of an underground tunnel for the Patna Metro. The incident took place late on Monday evening near the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Mor on Ashok Rajpath.

According to reports, the accident happened when a locomotive, which was used to transport materials in the tunnel, suffered a brake failure.

The malfunction left several workers stuck in the path of the propulsion machine. Seven workers were hit by the machine and one of them died on the spot. The injured workers were rescued and rushed to nearby Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where two workers succumbed to injuries.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which oversaw the construction, had initiated an investigation into the cause of the brake failure.

Notably, Odisha Labor Minister Ganesh Ram SinghKhuntia had earlier said that of the seven accident victims, three are from Odisha.

He also told the media on Tuesday that two laborers from Odisha died while another Odia victim who sustained serious injuries in the accident was undergoing treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital.
