One man is killed in a shooting and a confrontation with police in Saraland

SARALAND, Ala. (WALA) – A police chase led to a shootout and standoff on Ideal Drive near Shelton Beach Road in Saraland this morning, according to the Mobile Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Paul Burch, the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit attempted to serve arrest warrants on an individual for child pornography.

Sheriff Burch says the unit was conducting a traffic stop when they saw a gun. During this conversation, Burch says the man drove away, but officers performed a pit maneuver to stop the man.

Burch says the man was able to recover from the pit maneuver and fired several shots at deputies. Officers returned fire until the man could reach his home, Sheriff Burch said.

The man barricaded himself in the home. At that point, officers attempted to communicate with the man, but negotiations failed when the person began shooting at law enforcement officers and law enforcement officers returned fire, Sheriff Burch said. He states that more than 100 bullets were fired during the exchange.

The person in the shooting has been pronounced deceased.
