Nashville driver charged after eating donuts and crashing into a police cruiser on I-24

A 22-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer Tuesday morning in connection with a crash involving a cruiser on Interstate 24.

Metro Nashville police said the driver was fleeing a stop on Shelby Avenue when Officer Joe Medina witnessed the man driving recklessly on Koreans Veterans Boulevard around 1:30 a.m.

In a one-minute, two-second video released by MNPD, the 22-year-old is seen swerving from left to right after entering westbound along I-24 and then swerving again to face the officer before turning around the cruiser drives and performs. donuts on the roadway before crashing head-on into the cruiser.

Police said in a news release that the man fled after hitting the cruiser and pulled back into the driveway.

Police said Medina suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, treated and released Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives were able to track down the 22-year-old as the driver. He turned himself in on Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the 22-year-old is charged with evading arrest in a motor vehicle and felonies including leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury and reckless driving.

The man is scheduled to appear in court on November 15 for a plea hearing. He is being held on a $27,500 bond.
