Super typhoon Kong-rey: Hong Kong airlines cancel at least 24 flights

At least 24 flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan have been canceled due to the approaching super typhoon Kong-rey, which is expected to pass 500 km from the city later this week.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Kong-rey will move towards Taiwan on Wednesday and pass through the central and southern parts of the island on Thursday. It will come within 800 km of Hong Kong on Thursday morning and 500 km of the city in the coming days.

Although the Observatory said the super typhoon would not have a serious impact on Hong Kong, air traffic has been disrupted.

Cathay Pacificthe city’s national carrier, said on Wednesday it had canceled some flights between Hong Kong and Kaohsiung and Taipei on Thursday, without providing details. Further cancellations or delays were possible in the next 24 to 48 hours, it added.

Cathay said it had informed affected passengers about rescheduling their flights.

HK Express 18 flights canceled between Hong Kong and Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung, scheduled for Thursday.

“Affected passengers can rebook at no additional cost or request a full refund for the unused sectors, depending on the offer offered,” the company said. “Passengers also have the option to reroute to other destinations within Taiwan and China at no additional cost. The change is subject to seat availability.”
