Berbice man arrested for raping 9-year-old girl

Accused: D’Andre Perry

A 27-year-old man was sent to prison today for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl.

The court heard the girl had fallen unconscious and lost a pint of blood as a result of the horrific act.

D’Andre Perry from Berbice was not required to defend the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court to face the charges.

The incident in question took place on October 19.

However, the man was only arrested last Saturday at a bus parking lot in the capital Georgetown, after being on the run for a week.

The court heard some details of the incident before the magistrate remanded the accused rapist in custody.

Police prosecutor Corporal Shenell Matterson told the court that on the day in question the girl went to her grandfather’s house when Perry summoned her. The girl reportedly stopped by his house and was invited inside.

Matterson also revealed that Perry then allegedly exposed his genitals to the girl and began masturbating. They then undressed the girl and committed the brutal act.

In reference to the court evidence available to the prosecution, Matterson noted that the girl began to bleed and scream.

The prosecutor further explained that Perry then left the house on his bicycle.

The girl had reportedly fallen unconscious, but when she regained consciousness she narrated what had happened.

She was taken to hospital where she had to undergo surgery. The court was also told that the girl lost a liter of blood as a result of the incident.

Matterson said the prosecutor objected to bail because Perry, if granted provisional freedom, might not return to court, given that he went into hiding after allegedly committing the act.

Magistrate Matthias said in refusing bail the court took into consideration three factors; the fact that the suspect may be unwilling to return to court, the age of the victim and the injuries caused.

The suspect must now appear in court on November 11.

The case has been transferred to the New Amsterdam District Court.
