Hotel standoff in Atlanta

A doctor was arrested after an armed confrontation with police that left both he and an officer injured at a downtown Atlanta hotel.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that Jay Berger, 70, was taken into custody following the standoff. The office said the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office will review the case after Berger is released from the hospital.

Police were called to the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta after a report of a man pointing a gun at an employee, the statement said. The employee spoke to the man after someone reported that items had been thrown in the hallway on the 33rd floor of the building.

When officers arrived at the hotel, the GBI says Berger barricaded himself in his room and SWAT was called to the scene.

Berger reportedly began shooting through the wall and one of the SWAT officers was injured, possibly by shrapnel, the GBI claims. A SWAT officer fired a shot back into the room.

Berger then went to the balcony and began throwing items off it, the GBI alleges. While the suspect was on the balcony, a SWAT sniper fired a shot that struck Berger.

11 Alive reported that Berger is a doctor.
