Canyon Bicycles announces major partnership with REI that could save you money

Canyon Bicycles, a leading global brand in direct-to-consumer bicycle sales, and REI Co-op, the outdoor retailer and consumer cooperative, have officially announced a partnership to offer Canyon Bicycle services in select REI stores. The program plans to expand to more than 200 REI stores by 2025.

As an authorized service partner (ASP) for Canyon bicycles, REI can offer customers more service options for Canyon branded bicycles and further strengthen Canyon’s existing service network, which has always been the biggest drawback to the direct-to-consumer model in bicycles industry.

What does this mean for the consumer?

Authorized Canyon service is available at select REI stores in a few states (Southern California, Denver, and Washington DC). The expected number will increase to 190+ REI locations offering this service by 2025. This means that REI customers and Canyon bike owners will gain several benefits, including a 20 percent discount on labor if they are an REI member, which many are too.

“At Canyon, we strive to deliver exceptional experiences throughout the customer journey,” said Jaclyn Mayer, Canyon’s Senior Director of Customer Experience. “Working with REI allows us to dramatically expand our service ecosystem, making it easier than ever for our U.S. customers to access high-quality maintenance, service, repairs and small parts.”

REI is already a comfortable and familiar place for most people who enjoy getting outside for recreation, and including a prominent name like Canyon into its offerings is a bold move that will likely benefit both organizations. The industry is fairly divided on this partnership, as it could have long-term consequences for the health of local bike shops. The tempting 20 percent discount offered to REI members could leave some local stores taking a hit.

One thing is pretty clear about this recent move: Canyons is committed to the customer experience and recognizes the pitfalls of the direct-to-consumer approach. The REI partnership will provide customers with a standardized place to return their bikes for service and warranty, something that will undoubtedly make the process easier for customers.
