Suspect shot and killed stepfather after finding toiletries in the garbage

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas man told police he shot and killed his stepfather after discovering his toiletries in a trash can, an arrest report showed.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Alexander Renteria, was arrested last Tuesday when police arrived in the 10100 block of Royal Mint Avenue. Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department also discovered the victim, his stepfather Christopher Harris, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the suspect’s bedroom.

Harris was immediately taken to UMC Trauma, where he later died from his injuries.

LVMPD detectives investigating the shooting spoke with Renteria after his arrest. During the interview, Renteria claims that the conflict started when he came home from work and discovered some of his toiletries in a garbage can.

After removing them, Renteria spoke to his mother and told her he suspected Harris of throwing them away. He then went to talk to Harris, which turned into an argument.

During the argument, Renteria told officers he left for his room and retrieved a Glock handgun, which he held onto as the fight continued. He then returned to his bedroom and grabbed an AR-15 rifle.

Harris, who had followed Renteria to his room, stood in the doorway. Renteria fired a warning shot at the nearby wall.

Harris tried to take the gun from Renteria, who then shot him in the hand and left leg.

Detectives asked Renteria why he didn’t close his bedroom door after the argument escalated. He responded that “it probably would have just made things weird the next day,” the report said.

The report also noted that Renteria also expressed regret over the shooting.

He is currently in custody at the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on November 12.
