The Kentucky community is marking two years since the death of a police officer in a crash

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) -Two years ago, a law enforcement officer from southern Kentucky died in a crash that investigators say was caused by a drunk driver.

Sergeant Logan Medlock is remembered in Laurel County.

A memorial walk was planned on the evening of the two-year anniversary.

A fishing tournament is also held annually in his name.

“The biggest thing we want to take away from this is we want to honor Logan’s memory and keep that memory alive,” Officer Hobie Daugherty said.

Sergeant Medlock died not far from where his shift began, telling others he wanted to arrest another drunk driver. But instead, police say a drunk driver crashed into his cruiser.

“It’s not something that’s going to go away. Ever. Something to live with and be constantly reminded of,” Daugherty said.

Casey Byrd remains in the Laurel County Detention Center, but officials say he will soon be transferred to a State Dept. jail. or Corrections system.

That was him convicted in August and sentenced to 20 years for murder, driving under the influence and other charges.

The crash changed the lives of many, both Medlock and Bryd’s and their families. But Medlock’s law enforcement family is trying to keep his name and memory alive. The fishing tournament is an annual success story.

“We normally have 100 boats turn up for the fishing tournament, and there is a lot of praise for the way it is organised. What a great cause it is,” Daugherty said.

The tournament raises money through the Fallen Police Officer Foundation, helping families and others continually affected by losses like these.
