Billy Corgan’s cafe destroyed, mother-in-law injured in car crash

Corgan’s wife, Chloe Mendel Corgan, did not share details about the injury but said Madame Zuzu’s would be “closed until further notice.”

Billy CorganThe mother-in-law was injured after a car crashed into the musician teahouse and venue, Madame Zuzu’sin Highland Park, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) Wednesday, October 30.

Corgan’s wife, Chloe Mendel Corgan, confirmed the accident Instagramalthough she didn’t share any details about the injuries her mother, Jenny, suffered. Augustus, the Corgans’ son, was also there, Mendel Corgan said, but was able to “jump out of the way and was not injured.”

Mendel Corgan explained that the car “went over the curb into Madame Zuzu’s and crashed through the window.” Video of the accident obtained by ABC-7 in Chicago, showed the windshields completely shattered, and a small red car covered in broken glass.

Mendel Corgan said the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation. Highland Park police did not immediately return Rolling stone’s request for comment.

“Our family is grateful for the quick assistance of Highland Park and Deerfield first responders,” she continued. “To this end, Madame Zuzu’s will be closed until further notice and we will provide updates as we move forward. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Corgan opened Madame Zuzu’s in 2012 and marked the occasion at the time with a short acoustic set Breaking pumpkins songs. The cafe also doubles as a play area where songwriters’ circles, jam sessions, open mic evenings and other concerts regularly take place.

“I want it to be a social hub that is interactive,” Corgan said Rolling stone when Madame Zuzu opened. “You try to attract different people from different walks of life. We want a dynamic in this. We don’t want a passive space.”
