Movies to watch next Don’t move

There’s something bleakly sinister about a serial killer thriller that begins with the killer ‘saving’ a woman from suicide so he can kill her himself. That’s the perverse opening scene of Don’t movethe annoying genre piece by directors Brian Netto and Adam Schindler that appears on Netflix just in time for Halloween.

Located in a beautiful piece of remote hinterland, Don’t move is all about the cat and mouse moves between “Richard” (Finn Wittrock), the cat, and Iris (Kelsey Asbille), the mouse. In fact, Iris is a grieving mother who lost a child under tragic circumstances in this wilderness a few months ago, and “Richard” is just one of many names adopted by a serial killer who, after taking Iris from a literal edge talk, injects her with a paralyzing drug. The approximately 80 minutes that follow are about a woman who is rapidly losing the motor functions of her body. Can she stay away or stay hidden long enough to avoid becoming another one of Richard’s disappearances?

Have fun Don’t move comes from the performances, but also from the way the characters navigate an idyllic yet unforgiving landscape. Near misses in whitewater rapids, tranquil lakes, and rustic gas stations provide a gnarly backdrop for core genre thrills. And if you enjoyed that, you should love some of these too…

Salvation

Perhaps the ultimate ‘nature excursion gone wrong’ Salvation remains director John Boorman’s best film and a staple of the 1970s Burt Reynolds one of the biggest, hyper-masculine movie stars of his generation. Although in this film Burt was just part of a larger ensemble, the apparent alpha among a group of former high school friends that also includes Jon Voight, Ronny Cox and poor Ned Beatty. The quartet are now in their thirties and most of them have families and children. They have come to the backcountry of Appalachia to tame the mighty Cahulawassee River on a canoe trip.
