20-year-old reportedly shoots man dead after fight over car crash: Las Vegas police

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 20-year-old allegedly shot and killed another man who punched him in the throat at a convenience store during a fight over a vehicle collision, according to documents obtained by 8 News Now.

On October 20, around 3 p.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at a store in the 3700 block of Paradise Road, near Twain Avenue. Upon arrival, officers said they discovered a man named Darrnell Worthy and a woman both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Worthy was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead. The woman was also taken to a nearby hospital, where she was last listed in critical condition, according to an arrest report.

Officers checked video surveillance and discovered that a blue Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound on Sands Avenue at Las Vegas Boulevard when it was involved in a minor crash with a Kia Soul, the report said.

Erik Morales, 20, who was in the Chevrolet, then drove into a convenience store parking lot with an unnamed woman to buy drinks. While waiting in line, the video showed Worthy, the driver of the Kia, and the other victim arriving at the same parking lot and entering the store, the report said.

Worthy was then seen confronting Morales for hitting their car and not stopping, punching Morales in the throat, police said. Morales responded by grabbing Worthy by the throat and pushing him to the ground, the report said.

Officers said Morales then grabbed a gun from his waistband and shot Worthy in the back as he tried to stand up.

The video showed Morales firing several shots before gathering his belongings and leaving the scene with an unnamed woman accompanying him, police said.

With the help of undercover LVMPD detectives, Morales’ vehicle was located, hidden under a tarp with the license plate removed. Detectives then witnessed Morales return to the vehicle, reattach the license plate and drive away.

Police said they stopped Morales and took him into custody, where he is charged with voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and robbery.

Morales’ next hearing is scheduled for December 18.
