Ace Flagg, the twin brother of Duke freshman and projected future No. 1 NBA draft pick Cooper Flagg, has committed to Maine.

The 1.80 meter tall attacker announced his commitment on social media on Wednesday. He will join the program as part of the Class of 2025.

Ace Flagg is ranked No. 272 among national prospects by 247Composite sports rankings. According to 247Sports, he committed to Maine over other options, including George Washington and West Virginia.

Flagg and his twin brother both grew up in Newport, Maine. Their mother, Kelly Flagg, played for the Maine women’s basketball team that earned the program’s only NCAA tournament victory in 1999.

Ace and Cooper Flagg began their high school careers to play for Nokomis Regional High in Newport, about a 45-minute drive from the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Both Ace and Cooper Flagg transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida before the previous high school season. Cooper Flagg announced in August 2023 that he would be reclassified for 2024, setting him up for his commitment to Duke for 2024-2025 and possible eligibility for the 2025 NBA Draft.

So Ace Flagg transferred this summer at Greensboro Day School in North Carolina ahead of his high school season.

In Maine, Flagg will play under third-year head coach Chris Markwood, who led the Black Bears to 15 wins last season, the team’s best record since the 2010-11 season. Markwood compiled a 28-34 record over two seasons in Orono.

Kellen Tynes credited Markwood’s defensive coaching when he received his second straight honor as America East’s Defensive Player of the Year last spring. That could be a good fit for Markwood’s program, Flagg, whose sports performance coach recently said Larry Mahoney of the Bangor daily news that the incoming freshman will be a “defensive anchor” at the university.

Maine will have to wait until the 2025-26 season to add a Flagg brother to the roster, but the program has less than a week to prepare before facing one as an opponent. Cooper Flagg will make his regular-season college debut for Duke against visiting Maine on Monday.
