DETROIT (WXYZ) — Three teenagers have been charged in connection with the murder of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Reckling after a months-long investigation.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy was joined at the announcement Wednesday morning by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, Detroit Police Chief James White and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

One man, 18-year-old Ramon DeBose of Clinton Township, is accused of actually killing Reckling. He is charged with one count of murder of a peace officer, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of firearm, one count of carjacking and one count of conducting a criminal enterprise.

Karim Moore, 18, of Clinton Township and Marquis Goins, 18, of Detroit are each charged after the fact with one count of accessory after the fact, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of firearm, one count of carjacking and one count of conducting a criminal enterprise.

According to the prosecutor’s office, DeBose fired the shots that struck Reckling, and the two others were reportedly in the car and helped him flee the scene and supported him after the alleged shooting.

“The murder of a police officer always provokes outrage and it should, and this time was no different,” Worthy said at the start of the press conference on Wednesday morning.

White spoke Wednesday and called the slain deputy a hero.
“Deputy Reckling was a hero. He was an absolute hero. He did what we all love to do and that is keep our respective communities safe,” White said. “He came to work like we all do every day of the week. He risked his life. He was chasing someone in our town for car theft and stumbled upon something much bigger than he even thought.”

Bouchard also spoke on Wednesday. He thanked law enforcement agencies throughout the area for their efforts to hold someone accountable as the Reckling family continues to grieve.

“If you have a young mother with three children and another one on the way, the void that that has created for her is going to explode her life in so many ways and she rightly and understandably wants to make sure that person is accountability is called for. ‘, said Bouchard. “Every day she wakes up thinking about that and every day she goes to bed thinking about that because there’s an empty spot next to her. So every day that ticks by, it’s obviously more and more fear. I think this is a good step in that process, but it will be a long process for her.”

Reckling was killed in Detroit on the night of June 22 while he was undercover tracking down a stolen vehicle.

Worthy said the State Attorney’s Office’s Public Integrity Unit had been working on the case for months, leading to the indictment. Investigators sifted through large amounts of evidence from social media pages, body-worn cameras, phone extractions, cell phone tower data, CCTV and video footage from the Ring doorbell camera. Worthy says that’s one reason it took several months for murder charges to be formally filed.

According to Worthy, the three suspects worked as part of a criminal enterprise that dated back to November 2023 and ended the night of the shooting.

That criminal enterprise resulted in at least four carjackings, at least four car thefts, eight gun possession charges and more, according to Worthy.

“This was a ring. This was something that touched a lot of cities and, like I said, three counties,” Worthy said. “If you are involved in something like this and we can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, we will charge for it.”

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said Reckling was following a stolen vehicle when one of the suspects got out and opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Reckling, who was not wearing a bulletproof vest, followed the vehicle the three young men were in because it had been stolen from Madison Heights earlier in the day.

Moore has previously been charged in connection with the murder with one count of lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation and one count of resisting arrest.

“I’m sure it was very difficult to wait four months, but we wanted to do this right,” Worthy said during the press conference.

All three teens were arraigned Wednesday afternoon in 36th District Court. DeBose was denied bond and will be held in the Wayne County Jail. Moore was given a $250,000 cash bond and would have to wear a GPS tether upon release. Goins was given a $1 million bond.

Prosecutors in the case say Goins was already out on bail in connection with another case at the time of Reckling’s murder. As a condition of that case, Goins was ordered not to have any contact with his co-defendant DeBose or contact with firearms, but he violated that order.
