Wildfire in Clara near Burkburnett ‘sparked by power lines,’ sheriff says

BURKBURNETT (KFDX/KJTL) – People are slowly being allowed back into their homes after a 431-acre wildfire west of Burkburnett forced authorities to issue a Code Red, prompting several evacuations.

The fire started shortly after 1:30 PM on Wednesday, October 30. At one point, firefighters thought the fire was under control when winds picked up and spread north.

The Texas A&M Forest Service Incident Viewer shows that the Clara fire has spread to more than 400 hectares, 50 percent of which is contained.

The Wichita Falls Fire Department, West Wichita Volunteer Fire Department, Burkburnett Fire Department, Sheppard Air Force Base Fire Department, Friberg-Cooper Volunteer Fire Department and the Texas A&M Forestry Service responded to the fire.

Wichita County Sheriff David Duke said he believes the fire was started by power lines creating a spark in a nearby oil field.

There have been no reports of damage to homes or injuries to residents or firefighters.
