The Witches’ Way was the ultimate scam

The Witches’ Way was the ultimate scam

Note: The following story contains spoilers from Episode 9 of ‘Agatha All Along’.

“Agatha all the time” – which continued the story of Agatha Harkness and the town of Westview – ended with an origin story for the hit “The Witches’ Road” and few answers.

In the series, Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) gathered a coven of witches to help her walk The Witches’ Road so that each of them could claim what they were looking for. Agatha was unknowingly accompanied by Billy (Joe Locke) – Wanda and Vision’s son who survived the hex spell at the end of ‘WandaVision’.

Long story short, the adventure at the heart of the nine-episode series revealed Agatha’s ultimate deception backfired, thanks to Billy’s inherited power.

Here’s what you need to know about what happened in episode 9 of ‘Agatha All along’, titled ‘Maiden Mother Crone’.

How did ‘Agatha All along’ end?

“Agatha All Around” ends with Billy realizing that the entire Witch’s Road was built by him. For each of the trials, he subconsciously drew inspiration from things scattered around his room: things like the Wicked Witch, the Oujia board, the seaside house from the first trial.

Agatha now appears as a ghost in his room after sacrificing herself – or, according to her, taking a “calculated risk” to Rio (Aubrey Plaza) to spare Billy’s life. He asks her if the Way was entirely his design and Agatha confirms this, saying that the boy actually did something interesting with his power, unlike his mother.

That’s when Billy realizes that Lilia (Patti Lupone) and Mrs. Davis (Debra Jo Rupp) are both dead at his hands. He thinks Alice (Ali Ahn) is too, but Agatha gently points out that she killed her. She also tries to comfort Billy by saying that he technically saved one of the witches from certain death.

We get a brief shot of Jen emerging from the ground on the edge of Westview after disappearing at the end of the final “trial.”

Agatha says Billy needs to get used to the feeling of losing a coven, and he refuses before storming off. He heads straight back to Westview and Agatha’s basement, where the door to his self-created Witch’s Way still awaits.

He starts doing some magic on the door as Agatha shows up again. She wants her locket where she kept Nicky’s hair, but Billy reveals that the spell he performs will banish her once and for all.

“Time to step into the light or Rio’s toxic embrace,” he tells her.

Agatha begins to beg and plead for her life and tries to knock the locket out of Billy’s hand. She finally succeeds after yelling at Billy that she is afraid to face Nicholas. She floats to the ground and manages to hang the locket back around her neck, while Billy says he’s sure her son would forgive her.

“It’s only when you say things like that that you remind me of him,” she replies.

The pair take each other in and Billy admits that being a ghost might suit Agatha. He says she might be his spirit guide and Agatha agrees that they make a good team: a Coven of Two. Billy closes the door to the Witches’ Way and memorializes Lilia, Alice, and Mrs. Davis (who?) on the ground before opening another door with Agatha at his side.

“Let’s go find Tommy,” she says before the credits start rolling.

The origins of ‘The Ballad of the Witches’ Road’ are revealed

The first half of the episode spends a lot of time focusing on Agatha and her son Nicholas. It starts with her giving birth and Nicky actually dying in the process. Rio shows up to take the boy and Agatha begs her. Death agrees that she can give her more time, but doesn’t specify how much.

As Nicky grows older, he helps his mother lure witches to her with all kinds of tricks and schemes so that she can drain their energy and magic. She becomes stronger, but Nicky asks why she can’t be friends with other witches.

During their travels, Nicky starts making up a song about walking on a windy road. Agatha joins in so the two can bond and eventually write the first draft of ‘The Ballad of the Witches’ Road’. Nicky even plays it in at least one town (and probably others too) after they turn the Windy Road into Witches’ Road.

Rio eventually comes for Nicky and as Agatha buries and mourns her son, she sings their song and a young witch hears it. She has heard the song and believed it to be true, and now she and her coven want to walk the path to fulfill their desire. Agatha immediately realizes what this last gift from Nicky means.

For generations, Agatha has used the song as a lure to make one coven of witches appear and undermine their magic. It works flawlessly until the coven she brought together in Westview in episode 1. At that moment, right when she was ready to act, a door actually appeared thanks to Billy and his depicted Witches’ Road waited inside.

So yes, “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” was a glorified lure for generations of hapless witches.

Who is Tommy?

Tommy is Billy’s twin brother. He appears in “WandaVision” and is seen with super speed, much like Wanda’s brother Pietro. The penultimate episode of “Agatha All Along” seemed to show a boy who was bullied and drowned in a swimming pool, and that’s the child Tommy’s soul was clinging to.

That’s probably the first place Billy and Agatha will go in their search for his brother. Whether that means a Billy-centric spin-off or season 2 of ‘Agatha All Along’ remains to be seen.

Was there a post-credit scene?

No. There was no post-credits scene after the finale of “Agatha All along”. The final moments tease that Billy and Agatha – now a ghost – will head off to find Tommy, but other than that there were no teases.

However, there is already a confirmed story in the works that will also stem from “WandaVision” and will likely have ties to this series. A Disney+ show focusing on what happened to the White Vision after the events of “WandaVision” is in the works with Paul Bettany returning and helmed by Terry Matalas.

All episodes of “Agatha All Along” are now streaming on Disney+.
