Officers clash with ‘hostile’ baseball fans in Los Angeles after Dodgers win the World Series, police say

Baseball fans gathered downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the Dodgers victory in the World Series threw projectiles and fireworks at officers who tried to disperse them, police said.

The “hostile” crowd, which had gathered near 9th and Flower streets, was deemed an unlawful assembly late Wednesday, Los Angeles police said on social media.

“Leave the area immediately and follow all officer commands,” the department said on social media.

As police ordered the dispersal, the crowd began moving east toward 8th Street, police said.

“Several projectiles are being thrown at LAPD officers in the Olympic area & Grand,” the department added. “Additional resources are active in that area to help. If you are on the street, at or next to that intersection, leave the area immediately and obey the officers’ orders.”

Police also said they had received reports of looting in the area.

Mayor Karen Bass had previously warned that “violence will not be tolerated” as the city celebrated its victory over the New York Yankees.

“LAPD is currently on tactical alert and has activated a strategic plan to protect communities and businesses,” she said, “which includes proactive engagement and a coordinated strategy with regional partners to ensure all Angelenos can celebrate safely.”
