Man arrested for raping woman with speech impediment in WB

KOLKATA: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 40-year-old woman with speech impediment and mental health problems in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, police confirmed on Thursday.

According to a senior police officer, the suspect was arrested on Wednesday after the victim’s family members caught him and handed him over to the authorities.

The woman’s relatives alleged that the man lured her to an abandoned house in Kultali after she left her home and then raped her.

After the arrest, the suspect was brought before the local court, which imposed a prison sentence of fourteen days on him.

One of the woman’s relatives alleged that a local panchayat member had offered Rs 2 lakh as compensation to settle the case, but the offer was rejected.

Earlier in October, Kultali and nearby Joynagar witnessed unrest following the alleged kidnapping, rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl. Her body was discovered several hours after she was reported missing.
