Man arrested in Australia for alleged drug smuggling

A man has been charged for allegedly trying to smuggle about 25kg of methamphetamine from Thailand to Australia, Australian authorities said.

The 38-year-old was arrested at Sydney Airport when he arrived on a flight on Monday.

He is described as having dual citizenship between Britain and Ireland.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers searched the man’s suitcase and bag and reportedly found around 25 parcels, each containing one kilogram of white powder.

Preliminary testing returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers subsequently arrested the man and charged him with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

He appeared in Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court on Tuesday and is expected to appear in court on January 8, 2025.
