Explosives expert investigates ballot box fires in Portland and Vancouver

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – After hundreds of ballots were destroyed at polls across the Pacific Northwest on Monday, a fire and explosives expert is considering an investigation she said is just beginning.

Nicole Brewer, a fire investigator with 26 years of experience, spent most of her career at Portland Fire & Rescue, but now works in the private sector as a consultant for Envista Forensics. While she can’t speculate on the details of the investigation surrounding the ballot box fires, she said the crime surrounding voting during a heated election cycle will certainly be taken into account.

‘I’m sure they will test everything and look into all aspects of this investigation. I mean, it’s strange that it was with a ballot box to begin with, and I think we’re all aware of that. They are taking this very seriously and I am confident they will find the perpetrator,” said Brewer.

On Wednesday, law enforcement leaders in Portland hosted a news conference on the topic of election security.

It is unknown how long the investigation will last or when the public can expect answers. However, Brewer is confident that the answers will eventually circulate.

“They take the time to investigate. There are many people involved. There could be a lot of information coming at them, reliable information, and maybe even not so reliable information, but they have to filter through that,” Brewer explained.

On Wednesday, Portland police released a description of the suspect they believe they may be responsible for destroying a few ballots in Southeast Portland and hundreds in Vancouver. They also revealed that they think he is very knowledgeable about mental fabrication and welding.

“I’m sure the team is paying attention to these things, and they will all work diligently to put all those pieces together as well, to understand not just how this happened and not just who did it. but why,” Brewer said.

With so much unknown, Brewer said she understands why this incident is alarming to the public, but along with local officials, they are urging voters not to let this incident deter them from voting.

“While this is scary, know that there are people working on this issue,” Brewer said. “It’s definitely something to worry about, but try to keep going.”

Authorities believe the suspect may strike again. Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a $2,500 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest.
