Seven tournaments could eliminate their qualifying events on Monday

Seven tournaments could eliminate their qualifying events on Monday

Among the many issues raised in a letter shared by the PGA Tour with its players was the possible cancellation of seven qualifying tournaments on Monday. This topic will be one of the topics voted on by the Board of Directors in November.

Golf week was the first to report that these changes were in the works in June. The proposal, a copy of which Golf week indicates that the maximum field sizes will be reduced. It has become a growing concern that field sizes of 144 and 156 mean that too often no cuts are made on Fridays, and shortening the fields should remedy this, but it also takes away playing opportunities for members.

Who is in danger of losing a Monday Q?

Monday qualifiers would no longer be held at the Sony Open, WM Phoenix Open, Mexico Open at Vidanta, Cognizant Classic, Puerto Rico Open, Corales Puntacana Championship and Myrtle Beach Championship.

The Phoenix Open Qualifier earlier this year it attracted 104 golfers after more than 600 had registered for one of eight pre-qualifications. Only the top three finishers from that Monday Q advanced to TPC Scottsdale.

The qualifiers at the Valspar Championship, Texas Children’s Houston Open and Valero Texas Open would survive, but would be reduced from four spots to two available spots.

Five golfers won the Monday qualifiers

There have been five golfers since 1980 to win a PGA Tour event after qualifying on Monday earlier this week:

  • Corey Conners, Valero Texas Open 2019
  • Arjun Atwal, 2010 Wyndham Championship
  • Fred Wadsworth, Southern Open 1986
  • Kenny Knox, 1986 The Honda Classic
  • Jeff Mitchell, Phoenix Open 1980

The Tour’s Policy Board is scheduled to meet prior to the RSM Classic on November 18.
