Flood death toll in Spain rises above 100 after nine dead in garage | World | News

Spanish aid workers have found the bodies of another nine people in a garage on the outskirts of Valencia.

The grim discovery in the city’s La Torre district brings the total number of deaths from the devastating floods to more than 100.

The narrow streets of the neighborhood turned into death traps as walls of rushing water flowed through them.

Floodwaters poured into the ground floors of homes, sweeping away cars and people before they could reach safety.

They left a trail of utter destruction, with cars piled on top of each other, uprooted trees and downed power lines.

The area looked as if it had been hit by a powerful hurricane or tsunami.

Many people died after being trapped in their cars, unable to get out and flee to safety.

“The neighborhood is destroyed, all the cars are stacked on top of each other, it is literally destroyed,” said Christian Viena, owner of a bar in Barrio de la Torre.

Regional and local aid workers are carrying out the rescue operation together with more than a thousand soldiers.

Spain’s defense minister said soldiers had recovered 22 bodies and rescued 110 people on Wednesday evening alone.

Communities are still trying to come to terms with the horrific consequences of the floods, one of the worst Spain has seen in decades.

Paco, a business owner near Valencia, told Sky News: “We have lost the business. All these cars

‘We lost everything because of the floods. And who is going to pay for this now?

“We are totally ruined.”

Carolina Torner, whose home was destroyed by the flood, told how she saw a woman in deep water barely managing to keep her face above the surface.
