Residents are being urged to “spark joy, not fear” for Staffordshire’s wildlife, pets and livestock by taking extra care this Bonfire Night.

As the festivities approach, Staffordshire County Council is reminding residents to be aware of wildlife – especially hedgehogs – who may be seeking shelter in piles of branches and leaves.

Hedgehog populations do halved in the past ten years, making it crucial to protect these endangered animals.

To protect hedgehogs and other wildlife this season, park rangers recommend taking these simple steps:

  • Buy Silent Fireworks: This will help prevent stress to wildlife, pets and livestock.

  • Build bonfires at the last minute: Light your bonfire on the day you want to light it to prevent animals from taking up residence there.

  • Check before lighting: Always thoroughly inspect bonfire stacks before lighting them to ensure they are free of hidden wildlife.

  • Use a protective barrier: Consider placing a barrier around your campfire to keep animals away.

  • Light from one side: Lighting the fire on one side gives any animals inside a chance to escape safely.

Please note that it is illegal to set off or throw fireworks in the street or other public areas, including Staffordshire’s country parks.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, Victoria Wilson, said:

“Bonfire Night is a time of celebration, but it can be frightening and dangerous for wildlife. Simple actions such as building bonfires at the last minute and monitoring them carefully can make a big difference in protecting hedgehogs and other animals.

“I would also encourage residents to consider whether they really need their own bonfire or fireworks display. With so many public displays taking place in Staffordshire, attending one of these events is an excellent way to enjoy the festivities while minimizing the risk to wildlife, pets and livestock.”

Consider these steps for a more environmentally friendly Bonfire Night:

  • Choose environmentally friendly fireworks: White fireworks contain fewer harmful chemicals.

  • Skip sky lanterns: These can take years to break down; try using fairy lights instead for a safe, charming effect.

  • Only burn safe materials: Avoid burning furniture or household waste, which may release pollutants. Instead, take unwanted waste to your local waste management company Household waste recycling center.

  • Clean up: Dispose of any fallen debris to keep our green spaces tidy and safe.
