Online fundraiser for family of teen killed in officer-involved shooting

The family of the teen shot by police during a foot chase in Findlay on Monday has launched an action GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs.

The Lucas County Coroner’s Office identified the teen as Kalvin Darapheth, 17.

The GoFundMe page reads:

“As a parent, this is the worst decision you can make. Arranging a funeral for your teenage child who was suddenly killed during a gunfire due to a misunderstanding. We ask for some help with the costs of the funeral expenses. If you can help, we would appreciate it. Thank you for all the support and love.”

About $3,000 of the $10,000 goal was raised Thursday morning.

Findlay police said officers were dispatched to Bernard Park Monday evening after a report of three juveniles drinking alcohol.

Officers arrived and located the three juveniles in the park.

During the investigation, one of the youths fled on foot, after which an officer gave chase.

According to police, the young suspect fired a firearm at the pursuing officer during the foot chase.

The pursuing officer returned fire and struck the juvenile suspect.

Officers immediately provided first aid.

The juvenile suspect was transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital and later to a hospital in the Toledo area, where he died.

Police Chief James Mathias issued the statement following statement:

“This was a dangerous and tragic situation. Our officers are trained to respond to threats of violence, especially when a weapon is involved. There was a gun repaired on site. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who as a department was part of this critical incident and also the loss of a life.

We are aware of the comments, assumptions and misinformation on social media and we will release information as it becomes available. We are working closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to release redacted information regarding Axon Body Worn Camera footage in the near future.”
