Ukraine accuses Russian soldier exposed by Kiev Independent of rape

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General on October 31 accused Russian soldier Mykola Senenko of raping a woman in Kherson Oblast in 2022.

The Kiev Independent in June identified two Russian soldiers involved in the rape of two women during the occupation of Kiev and Kherson Oblasts in March 2022, including Senenko.

The findings served as the basis for the Kiev Independent’s documentary on Russian sexual violence in occupied parts of Ukraine – He came back — available in English and Ukrainian.

Synenko, who was drafted from the occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast, was deployed to the Russian 109th Motorized Rifle Regiment in the occupied parts of Kherson Oblast in early 2022.

After interviews with locals and officials on the ground, the Kiev Independent discovered that Senenko had raped a woman in Krasnivka, Kherson Oblast. The findings have been passed on to the public prosecutor’s office.

In April, Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council that Russia sexual violence as a weapon against civilians and prisoners of war.

At the time, the Attorney General of Ukraine did so included Nearly 300 cases of sexual violence committed by Russian forces since the beginning of the year large-scale war.

Citing testimonies of people released from Russian captivity, Kyslytsya said more than 50 percent of detainees suffered. torturerape or other forms of sexual violence.

The recorded figures are likely an undercount, Kyslytsya said.

“Survivors can’t wait for the war to end,” he said. “They need support and justice now.” Ukraine has launched a pilot program to provide emergency financial reparations to victims of sexual violence, Kyslytsya said.

The program is supported by the Global Survivors Fundthat stands up for victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
