Man admits he shot two people, setting his house on fire

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) – Elizabethtown police say a man has admitted to shooting two people and then setting a house on fire Wednesday.

According to police, the Elizabethtown Fire Department responded to a call for a fire on Henon Lane and when police arrived on scene, police found two men dead from gunshot wounds.

Investigators on site report that the fire was ‘intentionally’ started.

Police say witnesses reportedly saw a gold pickup leaving the scene, which officers later found at a local motel.

Police said surveillance footage showed 45-year-old Dustin Caudill “getting out of the truck and throwing away a gun.”

Police say that after further investigation, they found “the victims’ personal belongings in Caudill’s motel room” and that he had also discharged a firearm at a third victim.

In an interview, police say Caudill confessed to the offenses, admitting that he “shot the victims and intentionally set the house on fire” and “stole the victims’ wallets and threw them in the trash at a gas station “.

Caudill is booked into the Hardin County Detention Center and faces the following charges:

  • first-degree arson
  • two murders
  • tampering with physical evidence
  • possession of a handgun by a convicted felon
  • premeditated theft
  • first-degree wanton endangerment
