How to Upgrade Gear in Dragon Age The Veilguard

You can upgrade equipment with a visit to the Caretaker’s Workshop under the Fen’Harel statue in the lighthouse courtyard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. As you leave the main lighthouse and enter the courtyard, the statue is directly in front of you with a book in front of it. Walk towards it and the Caretaker will appear behind the book.

Upgrading equipment is locked to your Caretaker level – so you may not be able to upgrade the piece you want if it is not at the required level.

Therefore, we strongly recommend that you raise the Caretaker’s Workshop to rank two when you want to use it for the first time, otherwise the initial rank is quite limited. You can upgrade the Workshop’s rank by interacting with the Caretaker and selecting the ‘Rank Up’ option on the right side of the menu that appears.

If you have the right amount of souvenirs to spend (these can be found all over Thedas), you can use the indicated prompt to upgrade the workshop rank. You can continue to upgrade the rank as much as you want, as long as you have the right amount of memories.

To upgrade gear, speak to the Caretaker in their workshop to open the main menu and select the ‘Upgrade’ option there. This will take you to another menu where you can select items from Rook’s or your companion’s collections, depending on which items you want to upgrade.

For Rook, you can upgrade most of their equipment, minus the rings and amulets you’ve collected for them. If you want to upgrade the rarity of an item, you must find its duplicate in order to do so. However, we found that you cannot upgrade unique items.

For your companions, you can upgrade their two-handed weapons and their armor. It’s significantly less than what you can do with Rook, but it’s still worth taking the time to make them stronger for the challenges ahead.

Now to upgrade a piece of equipment (for Rook or a companion), select it from the upgrade menu. Two boxes will then appear: one in the center of your screen, where you can see the current stats of that piece, how much the stats will increase with an upgrade, and then how many materials it costs to apply this upgrade.

Then a smaller box will appear on the right side of the screen. This will show you a description of your chosen item and display the statistics of what it will become after you apply the upgrade.

If you have the right materials, simply use the requested command to ‘level up’ your equipment (which is literally the game’s way of saying ‘upgrade’).

Now that you’ve done that, you can continue upgrading as many pieces as you want! Just now remember that your upgrades are locked at the Caretaker levelso if you can’t do what you want, it’s probably because you haven’t reached the level requirement yet.

You can also upgrade some items by purchasing duplicates from a seller.
