Student arrested after metal detector warns officers about weapon at school

VERO BEACH, Fla. – A Vero Beach High School student was arrested Thursday morning after he tried to pass through a metal detector with a gun in a backpack, authorities said.

In a news release, Indian River County School District Public Information Officer Cristen Maddux said an OPENGATE metal detector at the entrance to the school, located in the 1700 block of 16th Street in Vero Beach, went off, alerting the school. substitutes for the means.

When officers searched the student’s bag, they found a weapon inside. It is unclear what type of weapon it was.

“The student with the weapon has been arrested and will not be returning to Vero Beach High School,” Maddux said in a news release.

Maddux added that “our school district has a zero-tolerance policy regarding weapons of any kind, both real and toy, on our campuses. Anyone found violating this policy will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted accordingly.”

The Indian River County School District uses OPENGATE metal detectors on its two high school campuses.
