That email says General Ramirez said he made the decision to retire so he could spend more time with his family.

On Wednesday afternoon, Texas A&M University President Gen. Mark Welsh released a statement congratulating Gen. Ramirez on his retirement.

With General Ramirez leaving his position at the beginning of the new year, a search will soon begin for his replacement.

“We will assemble a search committee fairly quickly and begin a national search for a new vice president for student affairs in short order,” said Susan Ballabina, chief of staff in the president’s office.

The search for General Ramirez’s successor may not end until after his retirement due to the long duration of the process.

If a gap arises, she says an interim will be appointed.

Ballabina described the role as one of the crucial roles within the university.

“We’re looking for candidates who see the world through our core values, right? We want to make sure they understand the unique nature of Texas A&M,” Ballabina said.

General Ramirez has agreed to an interview with KBTX on November 1.
