Micky van de Ven seems to have downplayed its seriousness the injury he sustained during Tottenham’s Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester Cityreassuring fans that he will be “back soon.”

The 23-year-old retired with a suspected hamstring problem as he sprinted back to tackle City winger Savinho at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium shortly afterwards. Timo Werner had opened the scoring.

Lot Udogie came on for Van de Ven – who saw Radu Dragusin switch to centre-back – and the Dutch defender was clearly uncomfortable as he left the field in tears in North London.

“He felt something in his hamstring,” says Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou said about Van de Ven’s injury after the win.

“It’s still early to predict how long he’ll be out, but he’s definitely felt something and we’ll see how he goes.”

A long-range strike from Pape Sarr doubled Tottenham’s lead ten minutes after Van de Ven’s substitution and the hosts held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals. Matheus Nunes had reduced the deficit just before half time.

However, the sight of Van de Ven staggering off the pitch in the early stages took some of the luster off the victory from a Spurs perspective, with games coming quickly for Postecoglou’s men.

However, the in-form centre-back – arguably Tottenham’s best player this season – has given supporters hope that his injury may not be as bad as initially feared.

“Back quickly,” Van de Ven said tonight to his 500,000 followers on Instagram.

There is no let-up for Spurs as a tough match awaits them at home against fourth-placed Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.

Postecoglou’s side have lost two of their last three games in the English top flight, suffering defeats at both Crystal Palace and Brighton, and will be desperate to bounce back on Sunday afternoon.

Should Van de Ven be ruled out of the match, Dragusin is likely to come on and replace the Dutchman at the heart of Tottenham’s defense alongside Cristian Romero.

Club captain Son Heung-min has not featured in Spurs’ last three matches, but Postecoglou is hopeful the South Korean can be involved against Villa.

“Sonny is almost fit, but from our perspective we are probably targeting next weekend and we are confident he will be right,” he told reporters before Tottenham knocked City out of the League Cup.

The Tottenham boss is also confident that both Werner and Romero will be fit and available for Villa, despite the pair failing to complete the full 90 minutes against City.

“Timo hasn’t played much so I felt it was hopefully more fatigue than anything else,” he said.

‘Cristian said he felt good, but my feeling said there was no point in taking a risk as we had Ben (Davies) who could come.’
