15-year-old victim identified in shooting on Helsinki Drive in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Officials say a 15-year-old boy died after a shooting in Richmond County Wednesday evening.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office told us Thursday that Devayn Grissam, of Augusta, was pronounced dead at 7:07 p.m.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the 2300 block of Helsinki Drive in reference to shots fired at 6:23 p.m. with one person down.

When officers arrived, they discovered Grissam had been shot at least once.

He was taken by paramedics to Wellstar/MCG, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.

While officers were at the hospital, another person arrived with at least one gunshot wound, officers said. They are unsure if the two victims who were shot were involved in the same shooting or a different incident.

Detectives arrived at the scene at 9 p.m. and had no additional information at that time, officers said.

Also Thursday, Richmond County deputies said so investigating the suspicious death of a 59-year-old on Lumpkin Road.

The shooting takes place in the middle of a outbreak of violent crimes that have claimed more than 170 lives within the CSRA in just over two years.

The crime outbreak has affected communities large and small, but Augusta, the region’s largest city, has been hit particularly hard.
