Bronx newborn dead: 14-year-old mother allegedly threw baby outside window of Soundview building, police say

SOUNDVIEW, Bronx (WABC) — The 14-year-old mother of the newborn found dead in the Bronx on Wednesday has been located, police said.

Police said the teen threw the baby out the window of a building on St. Lawrence Avenue.

The mother is being questioned by detectives.

According to police, an autopsy by the medical examiner will determine whether the child was born alive.

Police said a newborn girl was found in the courtyard of a apartment building around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

The child was discovered by a construction worker. She was unconscious and unresponsive with the umbilical cord still attached.

The contractor then notified the building’s superintendent, who told Eyewitness News he wished he had known sooner.

“I was like crazy because they say the baby was there for almost three or four days and the baby was next to my living room,” said Carlos, the building’s superintendent. “I literally could have looked out the window and seen the baby.”

EMS pronounced her dead at the scene and the medical examiner will determine her cause of death.

Residents say they are in shock.

“Why don’t you take the baby to church? If you don’t want the baby, take him to church or have someone take care of the baby,” said one resident.

The law allows a parent to drop off a baby at a hospital, staffed police or fire station, without having to provide a name.

Police sources say officers believe the teenage girl was hiding the fact she was pregnant. They also said the area where the baby was found is apparently difficult to reach.

No arrests have been made so far.
